Printing Processes

Thermography

Thermography is a printing process that creates raised letters, logos, artwork, or images. The raised image is immediately recognized when examining or touching the card or stationery.

Thermography achieves this raised lettering effect through a heat procedure applied at the end of the printing process. Not all thermography stationery is usable with laser printers. If you are planning to use thermography stationery with a laser printer, it is necessary to purchase laser printer acceptable thermography stationery.

Engraving

Engraving is the traditional printing process that produces raised letters, logos, artwork, or images.

Current engraving techniques utilize an etched metal plate. The metal plate is die-stamped on the paper, transferring the ink and desired image to the paper. The pressure of the stamp forces the paper into cavity of the etched metal plate creating the raised surface.

Comparing Thermography and Engraving

Thermography and engraving should not generally be viewed as competing printing processes. However, both processes produce raised printing and are equally acceptable for all correspondence.

Thermography compared to engraving:

  • Thermography produces a shinier raised surface. Engraving generally has a more matte finish.
  • Engraving produces an indentation in the back of the paper or card stock.
  • Engraving produces a smoothness around the front of the letters or images.
  • Engraving has the capability to produce lines of various heights or multi level surfaces. Some letters or images can be raised more than others.
  • For many printing purposes thermography and engraving produce generally the same level of detail and quality. Engraving may be preferred when multi level detail is required. Thermography may be preferred for its unique shine and unique design qualities.
